Taking Steps: Gait Training
It's not just all about "walking." It's about "taking steps." Recent studies have indicated that children who are provided with good trunk control, the right equipment, a proper program and an atmosphere to walk are exhibiting higher IQ scores and better language development as compared to those who are non- ambulatory. A walking program can also encourage better gross motor skills stronger bones, better breathing, bowel and bladder function, socialization skills, etc that go along with weight bearing. Of course any "stepping" program requires the direct supervision of a knowledgeable therapist as well as the right equipment, properly fitted braces and shoes, parental/therapist consent, MD clearance and a daily plan that everyone agrees to. How soon is OK to begin? That needs to be discussed with the child's medical team, but with a good program children as young as 6 months can be prepared to take steps. With all of the above in place, a walking program can bring about functional and cognitive improvements that are easily lost without one. Fore more information on a walking program, contact M.O.V.E.
