Take A Seat
Selecting positioning equipment can be a challenge. Every child is different and every child's positioning needs are different. We have tried our best to select equipment that will enable a school or institution to utilize the equipment from child to child or for a parent to select equipment that will grow with the child. The following guidelines should be helpful in your selection:
- Decide what functional activity needs the most attention (seating, standing, etc.)
- Decide what material you prefer. For example, dense fora will provide adequate support with comfort, whereas wood will provide firm support with lifetime durability.
- Consider coverings that do not absorb liquids. Some clients may, however, prefer softer materials that can be washed.
- Pay close attention to sizing descriptions and measure your child carefully.
We highly recommend your contacting a physical or occupational therapist if you are a parent or teacher selecting for the home or classroom. Remember, positioning is the foundation for all movement. It is our position that presents "ourselves" to the world around us. The quality of one's positioning can affect self-esteem, rehabilitation progress and ultimately the ability to function.
For children who are "active" sitters, positioning can enable them to function more appropriately in a classroom. This can be done in a positive manner which has good implications for the child, the teacher and the entire classroom. Now, please be seated!
