Abilitations Measuring Guide

We know that ordering the right size equipment can be a pleasure. Here are a few tips to help ensure your receiving the right sized equipment. Guidelines presented are for general purposes. Please, if possible consult a therapist prior to ordering equipment. For questions, call us at 800-850-8602.

Measure

Seated Equipment:

A) Seat Width: Measure the distance across the hips (hipbone to hip bone).
B) Seat Depth: Measure the upper thigh length (buttocks to bend in knee along the outer thigh).
C) Seat Height (for seated walkers, not wheelchairs): Measure the lower leg length from the bend in the knee to bottom of foot.
D) Ball Height: Measure the entire length of the arm and order the closest ball in centimeters (I know it sounds crazy but it works). Also, a properly seated individual should have his hips, knees and ankles bent to 90°.

Standing Equipment: For Walkers

E) Seat Or Saddle Height: Measure from the crotch along the inner leg to the bottom of the foot.
F) Handrail Or Walker Height: Measure from the top of the hipbones to the floor (When using a walker, the elbows should only be bent about 30°).

Wedges:
G) Wedge height should correspond to either the upper thigh length (if propping legs) or upper arm length (if used in prone).

Bicycles:
An individual's knee should only be bent about 10° at the bottom of a pedal rotation. Feet should be able to just touch the floor when individual is seated.

H) Seat to Pedal Length: Measure a straight line from the crotch to the bottom of the foot with the knee slightly bent.

Neck And Head Supports:
Diameter of inner circle should match distance across neck.
