How Do You Get Started?

'That's amazing ... I didn't know a multi-sensory room could do that!'
Occupational Therapists and caregivers working with multi-sensory rooms need to know how they will get the most out of the room, for the benefits of users.

That's why Abilitations MultiSensory is planning to launch a program of nation-wide training courses, run in conjunction with Hirstwood Training, which show how to use multi-sensory rooms beyond relaxation for motivation, stimulation, communication and advanced education.

Says Richard Hirstwood, who has had 20 years in the field, "These courses help caregivers increase their knowledge of the capabilities of the equipment in a multi-sensory room. We want them to say 'That's amazing I didn't know it could do that!"

Course delegates work extensively with a wide variety of equipment, experience first-hand sensory impairment, take part in an assessment session, look at story telling for adults and children, and see many examples of highly effective multi-sensory rooms that have been installed. In short, they gain extensive knowledge of the equipment they are using for the maximum benefit of those in their care.

"Clients learn through play and pleasure," says Richard, "and a multi-sensory room provides just that. It is a superb tool for caregivers whose clients need to be motivated and to learn vital life skills as well as literacy, numeracy, history and a whole host of other subjects. Yes, a multi-sensory room can be an incredibly relaxing environment, but it can be so much more for the user and we owe it to them to make sure they are given every opportunity to improve their abilities and to expand their horizons."

Taking a manual approach
If you can't make it to a training course, pick up a copy of our superb new manual which helps caregivers and their clients get the most from multi-sensory rooms. Exploring Multi-Sensory Rooms - A Practitioners 'Hands-on' Guide, available exclusively from Abilitations MultiSensory, is the first guide to help caregivers understand the life-skill benefits multi-sensory rooms can offer a client. The guide is written by two active practitioners who believe that multi-sensory environments give clients unique opportunities for cognitive learning.

As well as offering priceless information and advice, the guide includes a series of forms which help the caregiver build a complete record of the client's development and prepare a program to help the client use new-found skills. The record helps other caregivers immediately understand an individual's skill level and be able to create future development programs with ease.
