While recognizing that multi-sensory rooms can help patients relax and feel calm, SpaceKraft's philosophy has always been to use its technology and experience to create unique interactive environments which encourage communication and help clients develop to their maximum potential.

One of the best ways for a person with special needs to get the best out of their environment - and to communicate with 'the outside world' - is through stimulation. Experience has shown that only by interacting with their environment can patients achieve maximum learning, pleasure and development.

Whether a dedicated activity room, sensory garden, interactive swimming pool or just a small area in the corner of a classroom, the basic premise behind every SpaceKraft system is development through communication.

At Severndale School in Shrewsbury, England, children are developing their communications skills in a dark/white sensory room and interactive white room installed by SpaceKraft, as well as a Japanese interactive sensory garden and an outdoor adventure play area.

Says Head Teacher Chris Davies: "With these systems, the children can take charge, develop and create. In the past, interacting with their environments had not been so easy for them but the SpaceKraft solution solved this problem. Not only have we had a superb reaction from our profoundly disabled children, but we've also had a very good response from children with severe challenging behaviors."

Mr. Davies adds: "Before we installed this equipment, the children were simply not getting the level of stimulation they needed. Now we wonder how we ever managed without SpaceKraft."

At Milestone Special School near Leeds in England, children aged 2-19 with severe and profound learning difficulties are now able to communicate using interactive systems installed by SpaceKraft in a multi-sensory room.

Many of the children attending Milestone Special School have sensory and physical impairments, and needed facilities which will stimulate their senses. Because they cannot easily interact with their environment, the school wanted to create an environment which interacted with them and chose SpaceKraft equipment because it meant pupils would have a fun, stimulating and educational time in the multi-sensory room.

Says Head Teacher Jonathan Tearle: "The rewards and level of enjoyment the children get out of it are amazing. The effect on our children is a joy to behold. They get a massive response from very slight movements and with such a big reward they are encouraged to do it again." He adds, "The children's awareness of what is happening is apparent to all as they smile, laugh and start to make deliberate movements to see, hear or feel what is happening around them. They can now control their environment through switches which they operate. It is absolutely amazing to see."
